According to the group's Myspace page, sisters Elle and Shealeen Puckett were surrounded by music their entire lives, starting with their parents being in bands to playing music since pre-adolescence.[1] The sisters never planned to be professional musicians until an extremely positive reception following a benefit show in 2008 in their hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico. After pondering shortly after the show, the sisters formed Poema, won a "Battle of the Bands" competition and recorded two demos.[2]
In 2009, Poema signed to Tooth & Nail Records. At the time, Elle and Shealeen Puckett were 17 and 19, respectively. The record deal came as a result of a personal call from Brandon Ebel, founder and president of Tooth & Nail Records. The call followed a demo play from a representative who's attention had been caught by one of Poema's performances.[3] Aaron Sprinkle worked with Poema on recent projects.
In 2010, Poema was featured on every date of the Warped Tour in the Girlz Garage.[4][5][6]
According to the group's Myspace page, the name "Poema" means "beautiful masterpiece, and God's poem."[1] Keyboardist Shealeen Puckett went on to explain, "We hope that our music is God's poem, and we want everything we do to be a beautiful masterpiece through Him."[1] One review of the group's material found the EP, Sing It Now, to be lacking in "lyrical maturity" but also went on to say that Poema "has got a certain spark about it".[7] Another review claimed the EP was simply about teenage love.[8]
